Dirt Devil Vigor Turbo Bagless Upright Vacuum, UD70110 Review

This is the fourth Dirt Devil vacuum I've owned now over the past few years. I've stuck with them because they are inexpensive and do the job well. In addition, when I venture into a store nearby that has a huge display of dozens of various vacuums, I am always turned off by the way vacuums seem to be designed now to look like something huge and scarey and straight out of Starwars.

My closet space is at a premium so I go with what is compact. Most vacuums I see are huge bulky things, and the more expensive they are, the bigger and more ungainly they look. To me, modern design is all about making things more compact, but vacuums seem to be going in the opposite direction. I feel it's a marketing gimmick to make them bigger and seemingly more complex, and also more expensive. So Dirt Devil is one company that is bucking that trend.

This vacuum is no different as far as I can tell from the last two Dirt Devils I've purchased. It is the same price. It is loud, lightweight, has terrific suction, an easy to empty dirt canister, a long cord, and a rinsable hepa filter. The only difference is that this one has a dial on the bottom that lets you adjust the height, from a hard floor surface to various densities of carpeting. It may even have better suction than the already great suction of the other Dirt Devils I have.

Specifications:

*Recommended for cleaning carpets, stairs and upholstery
*Bagless upright vacuum cleaner
*25' power cord
*Multiple height adjustments
*Bottom-empty dirt cup
*Reusable HEPA filter
*Single stage cyclonic technology
*10-amp motor
*13" cleaning path
*1-year warranty

It is a simple inexpensive vacuum, that does what it was designed to do well. I did have one Dirt Devil stop working a month after I got it about a year ago, and called the company. They told me to take it to a local repair shop, and pay $60 to have it repaired. That was what the machine cost to begin with, on sale. So for that, I took off one star, in spite of the fact that the critisism I have is with past reliability, and lack of the company standing behind the products, rather than this machine in particular.

I like nice, expensive things, but that doesn't pertain to vacuum cleaners. As long as they work well and are reasonably compact and lightweight, they can be as inexpensive as possible. The two other Dirt Devils I have owned are still going strong, so my one bad one was apparently a fluke. I know this brand and like it, and plan to stick with it.

***The whole thing is made of plastic of course. That is why it's remarkably lightweight. I don't find this to be a negative feature, on the contrary.

***Where I disconnect the hose from the base to use the hand tools, there is a hinged flap you hold open to re-connect it. This is an improvement from earlier models which simply left the hole open when the hose was disconnected. I'm not sure it's necessary to have a lid on this hole, but it seems to be much more well thought out.

***I carry the dirt canister outside with a plastic bag to empty the dirt into. Dust flies everywhere. I rinse the filter about once a month. Since this only gets used two or three times a week in the kitchen, that seems to be all it needs.

This one, like the others I have, is very loud. But it has a powerful suction, and is light and easy to push. So I put in earplugs when I use it, and get the job done fast. The canister snaps out easily for emptying. The rinsable filter is a nice touch. This model is by far the best of the Dirt Devil's I've had, at the same price. The suction is even better and it's light as a feather. It's a simple machine, but it works like you want a vacuum to work. It also has a couple of ride-aboard tools. And it takes up little closet space. In other words, it's what I like and want in a vacuum.

I'm pleased with this vacuum, considering the price range. It's doing a fine job on my carpets and overall is pretty convenient to use. The dirt cup is easy to empty as well.

I prefer HEPA filtration on my vacuums. Other family members have allergies and, even though I'm the one who vacuums, I still want to minimize dust going into the air. The product descriptions for this vacuum on Amazon and dirtdevil.com don't mention HEPA; dirtdevil lists "micro fresh" filtration. However, it appears to me that the replacement Dirt Devil F66 HEPA Filter and Foam Filter Set For Dirt Devil UD70010 Uprights 304708001 is listed by Amazon as a HEPA filter. Either way, we haven't noticed allergy issues while using the Vigor (though, again, the sufferers aren't the ones actually using the vacuum.)

I do notice that this has to be on the next-to-lowest setting to get our carpets clean, even though they're what I consider an average plush.

The one feature that I really love on an otherwise so-so vacuum is the Turbo tool that attaches to the stretch hose. It's the hand tool for cleaning stairs and upholstry with a rotating brush, and of the several vacs I've owned it's the one thing that's really allowed me to clean my carpeted stairs. My hand vac and other vacuum attachments were too weak to do much, and of course full-size upright vacuums wouldn't really fit on the steps to work and were dangerous to try to balance with anyway. While the Turbo tool doesn't have the full power of a vacuum, it does the job much better than anything I've fit on my stairs and got them reasonably clean with a little work.

Yes, I would expect more power and features from a more expensive vacuum, but I have no major frustrations about this as a basic model. While I have yet to see how this Vigor Turbo keeps its power over time, I'm satisfied.
